She became involved in her profession because she wanted a career change; she started studying domestic violence issues and worked her way up, beginning as a volunteer, later accepting an entry-level position at a shelter, moving to the community office in a variety of positions, such as Coordinator of Advocacy and Community Outreach, Shelter Director, Contract Compliance Specialist, Shelter Director to the most recent position of Director of the entire program.

Ms. Adams has been with the YWCA in various positions since 1995 and became director of the Safechoice Domestic Violence Program in January 2010. She speaks within the community as well as internationally, most recently in Belarus. Ms. Adams also works on a local, state and national level to prevent domestic violence. She has had an article, "Debra's Story," published in an anthology titled "'Why Doesn't She Just Leave?: Real Women, Real Stories. A New Perspective on Domestic Violence."
My life is framed by my experiences and education; and my perspective is formed by my family, friends, and community. Born in South Dakota to working class parents, my older brother and I had a fairytale family life and childhood, growing up in a large extended family.
The civil rights movement & the second wave of feminism of 60s barely registered on my consciousness. Until I found myself isolated in an abusive marriage with an abuser who was expert at manipulation, & mothering 4 children -- ages 15, 13, 12, & 10. After I severed the relationship, fighting for survival, I emerged as a full-time, post-secondary student at the same time my fourth child was entering his college years. I was barely eking out a substandard, poverty-level living for myself and my children.
Education took me to a place of praxis -- deep thought, reflection, and action -- freeing my feminist identity to speak. As an Atlanta (Georgia) Semester: Women, Leadership, & Social Change Program student in 2001, I interned at the National Center for Human Rights Education where I researched human rights. My work was to develop educational Fact Sheets on the intersection of human rights with following subjects: domestic violence, racism, environmental justice, and disability. My undergraduate and graduate study of the academic disciplines of gender, culture, and history and some fundamental theories have inspired me to break the deafening silence that weds cultural discourses, social practices, and gendered expectations of survivors of domestic violence.
I am a survivor of domestic violence and an advocate for other survivors. I have been working in the field of anti-domestic violence for 17 years, starting as volunteer: support group facilitator, hotline advocate, and shelter staff. I was hired to the position of Coordinator of Advocacy and Community Outreach, in 1999 and recently (Feb 2012), my position as Director for the YWCA Clark County SafeChoice Domestic Violence Program was eliminated.
